Renovation Process
Tsumiki House
Solid Wood Flooring
Install solid wood flooring, converting two 6-tatami rooms into a single space of approximately 26㎡.
Earthen Wall
Repurpose the old tatami as both structural aggregate and a decorative feature in traditional earthen walls. Several different mixes of earthen plaster using clay, sand, straw fiber, lime, and water were applied to create different finishes in rooms.
Kitchen
I reused the existing kitchen sink and polished the stainless steel countertop. The cabinet doors were replaced with solid wood. I also installed melamine panels, removed the overhead cabinets, and built DIY worktops and shelving.
At the very beginning, I didn’t even know what length of nail to choose for the thickness of the boards, and I had hardly ever touched an impact driver properly.
Through trial and error, I gained more knowledge and tools, and I was able to somehow bring this project into shape.
I set out to see for myself what it means to connect through making things. And, I want to continue exploring where this small act might lead.
